I recently had the good fortune of being invited to Blackwood Lane Winery’s member appreciation evening, a fabulous annual event hosted by owner, Carlos Lee. To be clear, this event has always been one of the gastronomic highlights of my year, largely because Blackwood Lane’s wines are some of the best in Canada! However, this year’s event was the best yet, due largely to two words: Savoury City.
This year, Carlos Lee enlisted the help of the Queen of Catering herself, Donna Wadsworth, to help honour his beloved winery members, and, as usual, she did not disappoint.
Quality is Paramount
To pair Blackwood Lane’s world-class wines with Savoury City’s custom catering makes perfect sense! First off, both Carlos and Donna put quality before quantity. If you’ve ever had the good fortune of attending an event catered by Savoury City, you know that their canapés and hors d’oeuvres are divine, combining delicate flavours and textures–perfection in one bite! This is largely because Donna insists on only using the very best ingredients: fresh, locally-sourced, organic, seasonal and, above all, flavourful, are the words she lives by.

Similarly, Carlos Lee, owner of Blackwood Lane, puts the emphasis on quality over quantity. As he makes his wine by hand in the traditional French fashion, it’s simply not possible to mass produce! As a result of Carlos’ winemaking process, each bottle he creates is a work of art. You simply can’t mass produce wine of this caliber!
Organic and Chemical Free
Similar to Donna, Carlos also insists on using only the best ingredients, and that means choosing only the best BC grapes. It also means not using any chemicals in his wine-wine-making process. Most wines, especially those that are mass-produced, use fining agents which can even include such things as fish guts! Like Savoury City’s food, Carlos’ wine is organic and chemical free—something you notice on your first sip!
As we were treated to Blackwood Lane’s 2014 Chardonnay, a beautiful, golden straw coloured wine, Savoury City’s fabulous servers offered mouth-watering canapés that paired exquisitely! Blackwood Lane’s 2014 Chardonnay, with its buttery, floral aromas, proved the perfect pairing for many of Savoury City’s Cold canapés, including standouts such as the Prawn Palmier, and the outstanding Smoked Salmon and Savoury Shortbread. In short, the food pairings were a dream!
Savoury City perfectly captured the essence of Carlos’ wine philosophy: traditional yet innovative. This was reflected in their menu with modern and playful takes on classics such as Coquille St. Jacques, Lamb Osso Bucco, and the delightful mini Yorkshire Puddings. Not only were these canapés sumptuous, but they paired perfectly with the 2015 Vicūna Roja’s blend of earthy and fruity bouquet. Notes of raspberry, jasmine, and sandalwood popped when paired with these savoury canapés!
Savoury City’s canapés were fun, festive, and elevated the evening into a truly world-class culinary experience! Their servers were polite, impeccable, friendly, professional and informative!
