On your first encounter with the Portland Farmers Market you'll be impressed with it's sheer breadth. Comfortably nestled at the foot of the Portland State University, it proves the ideal location in the heart of downtown Portland. The market attracts a large cross section of the local population, as well as being a 'go to' destination for out of towners like ourselves.
At the market you'll find find mushroom foragers, exotic condiment specialists, and local organic growers happily conducting business in the most convivial atmosphere. When we were there in May, we found fabulous mazutaki mushrooms, a huge variety od planting bulbs and heirloom seeds, not to mention great baked goodies.
What also caught our attention was the "Chef in the Park" venue. It was a perfect way to showcase a local restaurant using ingredients right out of the market to cook with.
It's been said on many occasions that Portland is the breeding ground in sustainable initiatives and it seems to attract like minded people. In the case of The Saturday market, they're definitely ahead of the curve, but here in Vancouver we're not too far behind!
